What Is a Fractional Controller?

A fractional controller in Canada — senior oversight on your terms.

A fractional controller brings senior-level financial rigour to your business without the cost of a permanent hire. Positioned between your bookkeeping team and executive leadership, a fractional controller in Canada ensures your numbers are accurate, your reporting is reliable, and your financial processes meet a professional standard.

For businesses carrying a backlog, we also perform full month and year-end catch-up and cleanup — getting your books current and setting up the right processes before ongoing controllership begins. Learn more about CPA Canada’s financial reporting standards that guide our controllership work.

Also Available as an Interim Controller

Controller resigned, gone on leave, or stepped into a new role? We step in immediately — maintaining full continuity of your finance function, managing your team, and supporting reporting while you conduct your permanent search. Engagements run 3–12 months, available in-person, hybrid, or remote across Canada.

The Controller Gap
Your bookkeeper processes transactions. Your accountant handles tax. But without a controller, nobody is reviewing the work, enforcing policy, or ensuring your books are audit-ready.
What We Resolve
Unreliable month-end reporting, misclassified transactions, gaps in internal controls, and a bookkeeping team operating without senior oversight or escalation support.
Interim Coverage
When a controller departs unexpectedly, we provide immediate coverage — preserving continuity, supporting your team, and keeping reporting on track throughout your hiring process.

Common Questions

Fractional controller questions we’re asked most.

What does a fractional controller do?

A fractional controller owns the accuracy of your finance function on a part-time, ongoing basis. That means overseeing month-end close, reviewing and approving journal entries, designing internal controls, supervising your bookkeeping team, and preparing financial statements your leadership, lender, or accountant can rely on. Where a bookkeeper records what happened, a controller is responsible for whether the record is right.

How much does a fractional controller cost in Canada?

Engagements are structured as a fixed monthly retainer scaled to the size and complexity of your business, with no lock-in. For comparison, a full-time controller in Ontario or Alberta typically commands $110,000 to $165,000 in base salary alone — closer to $150,000 to $200,000 once benefits, payroll taxes, and management overhead are included. What is the difference between a fractional and an interim controller?

A fractional controller is an ongoing, part-time arrangement — consistent senior oversight month after month. An interim controller fills a defined, time-limited gap, most often when a controller has resigned or gone on leave, and runs at much higher intensity for three to twelve months. We provide both, and many clients move from interim coverage into an ongoing fractional arrangement once the business has stabilized.

Can you work alongside our existing bookkeeper?

That is the most common arrangement. A fractional controller sits above your bookkeeper rather than replacing them — reviewing the work, owning the close, setting accounting policy, and signing off on financial statements. Your bookkeeper continues handling day-to-day transactions, and the quality of that work typically improves once there is senior review and somewhere to escalate questions.

Our books are months behind. Can you still help?

Yes, and it is a common starting point. We begin with a full month or year-end catch-up and cleanup — reconciling accounts, correcting mispostings, and bringing your financials current — before establishing a reliable ongoing close process. You do not need clean books to start; getting them clean is part of the work.

How quickly can you start?

Most engagements begin within one to two weeks of an initial conversation. Where there is urgency — a controller departure, an audit, or a financing deadline — we prioritize rapid deployment and can often move faster. Because we are QuickBooks Online and Xero certified, we work inside your existing file from day one with no migration required.
